Loaded with history, both ancient and recent, colorful and quite lively Cambodia makes for an interesting place to visit. Yes it has Ankor Wat of course. And Phnom Penh with the killing Fields. But traveling to smaller cities also has it’s rewards. There are plenty of nice sights, the people are friendly and the is a bit of an entrepreneurial spirit noticeable when you come from southern Laos.
Kompong Cham
Kompong Cham, downstream from Kratie, was once Cambodia's third city. Now an important trade center is hard to imagine.
Kratie
Compared to Stung Treng, my first stop along the Mekong in Cambodia, Kratie is a real city. With some colonial buildings and just enough facilities for tourists. Yet pleasantly small-scale.
Stung Treng
Stung Treng is the first stop along the Mekong when entering from Laos. It immediately feels like an authentic and off the beaten track place.
