Kompong Cham

Kompong Cham, downstream from Kratie, was once Cambodia's third city. Now an important trade center is hard to imagine. Some French colonial-looking buildings and a lighthouse on the other side of the Mekong are reminders of that past. But with a number of special attractions nearby.

What Nokor

Wat Nokor is a modern Buddhist pagoda created within the walls of an eleventh century Khmer-style Mahayana shrine. Outside you see Khmer style facades, walls and guards. Inside is a modern temple with painted plasterwork, a few pieces of the original building are still visible.

What Hanchey

A pagoda on a hilltop with beautiful views of the Mekong. However, it is much more than a pagoda. A Chinese style garden, an eighth century stone shrine with Sanskrit inscriptions, An Indian looking building, some ancient statues and remains from different eras vie for attention with some bizarre images of fruits and animals. Surely the kind of attraction that sometimes makes a trip to lesser known places so pleasant. And the ride there along the Mekong is quite nice.
